She Plays, She Rocks, She Reads, She Speaks

Isla is Seventeen Months Old

Isla has had a language explosion this month. I started keeping track of the words she says so I could see how many she is saying. Toddlers are supposed to have at least 10 words by 18 months and I knew she had a lot more than that. Well, after listing them for a few days, we realized she pretty much says anything we say. The ones she says spontaneously started numbering up past 30 or 40 and kept growing each day. Then there are the ones she constantly repeats, like if I say, “I’m going to make french fries” she will repeat, “fra fry”. So, I didn’t know if I should count those words too, or just the words she said by herself. So I just stopped counting because she was well above 10 words either way. One funny thing is despite the fact that she says so much, it took her until this month to learn the simple sounds “uh oh”, and she couldn’t even say it right at first, she instead said “oh uh”. But she prefers another word when she has a little mishap, a four letter one that starts with an “s”. We aren’t used to these early talkers and weren’t prepared for that! Click here to see a video of Isla talking along with a few other recent videos of her.

Isla has also been stringing words together this month and has said such phrases as “me potty” when I was changing her diaper, “eye see” which refers to the fact that her eye is seeing something, “see book” when she wants to see a book, “see that” when she wants to see something else, and she signed “more, eat”. She prefers to shake her head “no” instead of saying it, and to sign “eat” instead of saying it. She still signs “all done” instead of attempting to say it, and sometimes signs “more”. She even engaged in a little word play this month when I heard her in the back seat one day saying “Owey, owie, Owey, owie, Owey, owie…”

Isla loves the snow! She says, “neeow” and loves watching it fall and reading her books that have snowy scenes in them.

Isla still loves trying to go potty, but hasn’t gotten any better at it. She sometimes runs to the potty, but can’t get on in time and pees in front of it. Other times she just goes where she is, or walks to a corner to go in. I took the potty chair away for awhile because I couldn’t handle all the puddles I had to clean up. We still take it out every now and then when she insists though. On December 3rd, she went potty in the potty chair for the first time. But, it was Joshua’s potty chair (a doll we have from when Owen was potty learning). We made a big deal about it anyway and Isla got to go upstairs and help dump it into the toilet and flush it down. She loved waving bye bye saying, “bye bye potty” to it as it went down.

Isla continues to love books. She absolutely loves being read to, but she also loves to just sit in her chair and read to herself for long periods of time. She has the book, A Monster At the End of This Book and she reads it to herself often. She sits in her chair and tries to say, “you turned the page!” in a loud voice, but it comes out, “ya turned a age!” in a high pitched baby voice. It’s so cute.

One day Grammie was over and Isla was sitting on her lap to have a book read, but Grammie and I were also trying to have a quick conversation. While Grammie was talking, Isla pointed to Grammie’s mouth, then to the book with a very serious expression on her face. As if to say, “hey lady, focus on your task and read to me”. Another funny thing about books is that Isla thought that she could do whatever was being done in the book and had no sense of proportion. So, if there is a picture of food, she wanted to eat. If kids were playing outside, she wanted to be outside too. And one day, she saw a fire truck in a book and she put her foot up on the book and said “wee, wee” like she wanted to hop into the book and start riding it. As the month has passed and she has gained more experience with books she seems to understand now that she can’t jump inside of books and interact with the pictures.

Isla demonstrates how she has a skewed sense of proportion!

When we went to Grammie and Grampy’s house one day, Isla started saying, “Asa” over and over again. At first we weren’t sure what she was saying, but then realized she was asking for her cousin Asa! She started yelling his name really intensely. He came over later to play with her and she was really pleased to be able to boss him around all evening.

Isla does many cute things all the time. She likes to pull tissues out of the box and blow her nose. One day she also wiped Owey’s nose, then Daddy’s, and then the Christmas ornament’s noses. She says “shhhhhh” with her finger to her mouth. She says “puppy, kitty, puppy, kitty, puppy, kitty…” over and over again, just because she likes puppies and kitties. One morning we were woken up by a dog barking. Daddy started play “yelling” at the dog waving his hand towards the dog and saying “go nigh night puppy! go nigh night!” Isla then started “yelling” too, saying “puppy!” “nigh nigh!” “nigh nigh puppy!” while she waved her hand in the direction of the barking. Now whenever we hear that dog barking Isla goes on high alert and starts yelling at him to go “nigh nigh”. She loves to ride on daddy’s back during wrestling time. She says, “ba pa, ba pa” (back pack) to alert him that she wants to get on. He then runs or crawls around while she laughs and screams with delight.

Isla helps Daddy around the house.

Isla enjoying the cardboard from the box our new dining table came in.

Isla loves to read her tiny little book.

On the 18th and 19th Grandma came from out of state to visit! Grandma brought Isla a new doll, which is very cute and had shoes, so Isla decided that this Grandma person was pretty awesome and she took to her right away. She went up and gave Grandma hugs and kisses and Grandma was so touched because the last time she visited Isla was really little. Isla seemed to know Grandma was someone special and she was immediately comfortable with her and wanted her attention and wanted to play with her while she visited. It was a new experience for Grandma having to split her time between two grand kids, and Owen doesn’t make it easy, but it went pretty well.

When Grandma was visiting we went out to eat. Isla wanted to get out of her high chair and she started to walk around the restaurant with her squeaky shoes and make friends with the people at the other tables. She would walk up to them and then smile and talk to them. Everyone loved her and an older couple sitting near us especially seemed to be taken with her. Right before Christmas I took Isla to a mall and she just reveled in going up to people and smiling at them. She saw some older ladies in a hair salon store window and stopped to wave and smile. She then realized she could go around the corner to get to them. She walked right up to the older lady and started talking gibberish to her. A few days later we went to Chipotle as a family. As soon as Isla was done eating she wanted down. She started walking up to the other customers and marching her feet to make her shoes squeak. Once she got their attention she would tilt her head and smile at them. I guess she has this whole making friends thing down!

The next time Grammie visited after Grandma was here Isla had to show her the new doll that Grandma had brought. Isla said “push” and then I showed Grammie how if you push the doll’s hand she giggles. Isla then said, “tickle, tickle, tickle, while tickling the doll.

This month Isla has really started to become possessive of Mama. Every time she saw Owen on my lap she would run over and desperately say, “Mama, Mama!”. Then she would try to push Owen off my lap. Owen says that this is because she doesn’t understand that he is Mama’s baby too, and also because, “Isla thinks she’s the center of the multiverse”.

Isla, after hearing Daddy and Owey go outside, tried getting in on the action. Only, she forgot a few important items…

Of course, we celebrated the winter holidays at the end of the month. Click here to see lots of photos. Or just look at this cute one of Owen and Isla and their cousins:

Isla loves to play with her big brother. She gets so excited when we pick him up from school. On the way home she keeps trying to say things to him  and goof around with him. One day she was playing with her new Christmas present, which is a tiny doll who has tiny shoes that can be taken on and off. Isla wanted the shoes on and off her doll over and over again. She was also walking the doll on Owen, bouncing the doll on his leg saying “wa wa, wa wa” (which is how she says “walk”). She then took the shoes by themselves without the doll and bounced them on Owen’s leg saying, “wa wa, wa wa”. We all laughed at her first joke! She seemed pleased that we thought it was funny :-)

Our Happy Holidays 2011

We try to celebrate a little bit of everything, from Hanukkah, to Kwanzaa, to Yule, to the Solstice, to Christmas. The first thing we did was celebrate with Uncle Mike and Aunt Diane. They gave the kids gifts, and we gave their animals gifts.

Isla loved her new shoes and dress up clothes. Owen loved his Star Wars toys! We gave their dogs “chocolates” which are dog treats made to look like a box of chocolates. We also gave them a dog and cat toy.

Our entire month of December seemed like we were playing a game of catch-up. So, we were late making our holiday cards this year. I just had no time to take photos. So one morning before carting Owen off to school we had about 10 extra minutes. I made them put on their holiday duds and sit on a rocking horse in front of the tree. I got one halfway decent image and used that for a holiday card. We only send out e-cards, so if you didn’t get one it’s because I don’t have your email.

Then on the 21st it was time to celebrate the Winter Solstice, which came up on us quite suddenly. I cooked a yummy meal, and wrapped up a couple gifts for the kids. We also lit candles for the evening and talked about the solstice and axial tilt. We let Owen stay up as late as he wanted to. I think he made it to about 10:30 or 11:00. It’s hard to say because he was still awake when we went to bed. I let him sleep in the next morning and he arrived to school a half hour late.

Isla got three little babies I found at the thrift store. As you can see from the photos she absolutely loves them! She carried them all around until Christmas, when her fascination with them was replaced with other toys.

We were really excited to decorate our new house for the holidays this year! Having a fireplace really helps things look more festive. We also had the perfect place for a wreath above the fireplace. Daddy made Boba flakes (they look like Boba Fett from Star Wars) and Mama hung ornaments from our gaudy gold chandelier. Owen brought home colored pages of something from Hanakkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas, so we hung those up too. We bought a new dining room table and chairs just in time for our Christmas Eve party. I like to have Owen make something for everyone each year, and this year he made candy. I think they turned out really great looking!

Then it was time for our Christmas Eve party. Grammie, Grampy, Aunt Berta and Jay, Cousin Lyric and Cousin Asa all came over to help us celebrate. Everyone brought Hor d’oeurvres and I made my Yule log cake. Grammie brought lots of presents for everyone!

The next morning of course was Christmas! Owen came into our room on Christmas morning and asked us if he could watch Sponge Bob on the computer like he does every weekend morning. We told him there wasn’t time and we had to open presents. He was not happy about missing Sponge Bob, but he was excited to get his presents. Isla had a great time opening presents this year too, and she stopped to play with each toy after opening it. She really liked her Little People Farm set and played with that most of the morning. Owen got me a present that had two chocolates in it and a bracelet that says, “relax and breath”. How fitting. I also got my yearly lottery tickets from James, and I gave him an iTunes gift card.

Above you can see pictures of Isla with her baby. We brought her the baby so she could try out her new doll cradle. She took her baby over to the tree and made her baby touch the tree. Then she said, “no!” and pulled her baby back. She is acting out what we do with her. We don’t generally say no to her, we try to redirect, but with the tree we had to say “no” a few times and evidently it made a big impression on her ;-)

After our own little family celebration we then headed to our relatives house. The kids got even more presents, and then we played the dice game where we all got more presents.

We took Owen’s annual picture of him under the tree with all his presents that night. Isla didn’t last though, so we had to take her picture in the morning. We bought most of their presents second hand, and Isla got a few hand-me-downs from Owen, so we didn’t spend too much this year. I suppose at some point they will notice if a gift is second hand and not like it, but for now they seem oblivious so it makes things a lot less expensive.

It does seem like things get more complex and stressful each year, so I’m already thinking about how to deal with next year. I’m considering doing the Yule 12 days idea, so the kids get a gift each day, instead of doing all the gifts in one or two days. I think it’s nice to see them appreciate each gift instead of just tearing through a pile of packages.

I think overall though we had a happy holiday this year. I’m starting to notice how some years we seem to revel in it, and some years sneak up on us and we keep trying to catch up with things up until Christmas morning. This year was the latter, so it was a bit stressed, but the kids had great fun and were oblivious to our little bit of stress.

Thanksgiving and Getting and Trimming Our Tree ’11

It is the holiday season and we have started the celebrating! We spent Thanksgiving at Grammie and Grampy’s house this year. It was a full house, and there was lots of good food. The kids liked seeing their cousins and Isla liked dressing up like a little old lady ;-)

A couple days later we went to cut down our holiday tree. It was not very scenic this year with a lack of snow and general ugliness, but it was a fun time anyway. Owen liked sitting on Santa’s lap. Isla hated it! I had no idea she would cry. Having not grown up doing Santa, and never going to the mall to do it either, it just didn’t occur to me. I plopped her down in Santa’s lap and then started fiddling with my camera. Isla just started screaming. I should have snatched her up right then and that is what I wanted to do, but I get a little obsessive about photos sometimes and figured a few seconds wouldn’t hurt. So I snapped a picture and then Daddy picked her back up. Looking back, that was kind of a bad parenting moment that won’t be repeated again. Kind of silly since I don’t even care about Santa in the least bit. It was just so unexpected it caught us off guard. But, Isla really liked her candy cane from Santa and snuggling with Daddy in the Ergo afterward, so I think she’ll be okay!

Mama cut down the tree this year because Isla was in the Ergo on Daddy, which was a first. We then put the tree on the sled backward, like we do every year, and scratched our heads when we pulled the sled and the tree fell off. We’re such rookies at this Christmas thing.

So we got the tree home and set up and the lights put on, and then we were worn out! As usual, Owen got right into working on setting it up with us. He is a very good little worker. Isla decided to put her stocking on one foot instead of hanging it from the fireplace. She also kept marveling at the fact that there was a tree in our living room. When she woke up from her nap and saw it all set up with lights she got a huge smile on her face.

A day later we put the ornaments on the tree. I let the kids go to town on it this year and was not picky about where things went. I had Isla put the soft ornaments on the bottom, and Owen put the breakables on top. We didn’t put any of our round glass ones up this year to minimize the breakable items in case Isla topples the tree. So far she has left it standing, so hopefully we can make it through the holidays with no tree disasters.

Isla is 16 Months Old

Isla is growing in leaps and bounds. She is well into toddlerhood and just loves to get right into things with the big kids. Her and her brother are always up to some crazy antics and whenever she can get wild with Owen she is happy.

Isla had a very busy month! On October 31st she was a ducky for Halloween. She loved it and had a great time. Then on November 2nd Isla had a surgery for her urinary reflux. It went very well and we are hoping the surgery worked. Then on November 24th we celebrated Thanksgiving, and a couple days later ventured out to get our holiday tree. Click on the links to see a lot more photos and get a lot more details about these events.

Isla is using some baby signs pretty steadily this month. She did the same thing as Owen did when he was her age and signed “more” while nursing. Apparently I ran out of milk! She even watched Signing Time! for the first time the other day. She really liked when the babies signed “more” since she knows that sign. I don’t like TV for under 2′s, but we made an exception for Signing Time!, mostly to remind us of some of the other signs.  She also loves using her hands to play games with Mama, like roll roll sugar baby (roll, roll, sugar baby, roll, roll, sugar baby, push, pull, clap clap clap!). We turned “pull” into her pulling my arms all the way down and her flipping backwards on my lap so that her head is upside down. This gradually changed into flipping her upside down and swinging her around by the legs, which used to terrify her but she now loves. She also likes when we lift her over our head and she balances while we hang onto her thighs. She also likes the hand game “where is thumbpkin”. I sing one hand in a deep voice and one in a high voice. To ask for more she pretended to sing in a deep voice.

Isla is also showing a wider range of emotions this month. She shows shyness by tilting her head down and looking up with big eyes as she twiddles her fingers together. She does this in new situations, or when new people are around. She shows happiness, of course, by laughing and screeching and running around. She shows anger by crying and yelling. She has shown jealousy this month too. Whenever Owen wants to cuddle with Mama, if Isla sees him she runs up to us and pushes Owey out of the way and asks to nurse. She has also been showing a lot of affection this month. She hugs and kisses. She kisses us, her dolls and the dolls at the store. At Thanksgiving she kissed Grammie with puckered lips and a kissy sound. She also was playing with Grammie’s snow babies and would kiss them and then would hold them up to other people’s mouths so they would kiss them too. On the morning after Thanksgiving Daddy and Isla and I all woke up at the same time. Isla crawled over to a drowsy Daddy and planted a kiss right on his cheek. Then Owen came in and she kissed him too. Then, not wanting to be left out, I asked for a kiss too and Isla complied. We all spent a few minutes in bed together and Isla was thrilled to have her whole family right away in the morning.

Isla also is showing a great deal of patience for a toddler! She tries new things over and over and over until she can figure it out. Even if she can’t figure it out she just keeps trying quietly. For example, she tries to buckle her carseat straps, or a dolls stroller straps over and over and over again. She can never quite get it, but she just keeps trying and doesn’t show any frustration. Grammie showed her how to wrap a baby doll up in a blanket and she has been trying to do this ever since. She can’t keep the blanket together on the doll after she picks it up, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to wrap her baby at every opportunity. We are all amazed at her patience and attention span at such a young age.

Isla has developed a new love this month: BOOKS! She loves to be read to. She absolutely loves books. It all started when I pulled Where’s Spot? off the shelf one day in an attempt to entertain her for a minute or two. She sat and listened to me read Spot with a huge smile on her face every time I opened another door and said, “nooooo”. When we finally found spot, she seemed disappointed and said, “noooo” in a silly voice. We then had to read Spot another fifty bazillion times over the next couple weeks. But Spot also opened the door to reading for her, and she now goes and gets books all the time. She comes over to us, throws a book on our lap and says, “boo, boo, boo, uh, uh, uh”, which means, “here’s a book, get me up on your lap so we can read”. Sometimes she can’t find the book she wants so comes over and pushes us off our chair and grunts (she must think it’s quite an effort for us to get up). She then leads us to the book shelf, sometimes giving us a clue as to which book she is looking for. She even pretends to read and points at the book over and over as if she is pointing at words and says, “uh, uh, da, ga”. She likes counting books and ABC books and she pretends to count and to say the ABC’s with those books. Sometimes she says letters when she is pointing at the ABC books or toys, like, “E, B, R”, but only once did I notice that she said the right letter (B) and I think that was probably coincidence. She is so interested in books and reading, much more than Owen was, that I wouldn’t be surprised if she becomes an early reader.

Like I said above, she likes to pull and push us around to get to things she wants. She will bring us to the book shelf, the refrigerator, or the toy room and try to get us to figure out what she wants. She also likes to call for Daddy or Owen lately. Owen is in the habit of calling for Daddy a lot, despite Daddy’s wish that Owen just come find him and tell him what he wants. Well, now little Isla will sit on the top of the stairs and yell out, “Daaa-uh-Deeeeeeeeee”. Poor Daddy now has two kids yelling for him. Isla and Owen will also yell for each other though, so they are getting a taste of their own medicine.

Isla is getting really independent lately. One day when I went to buckle her carseat she said, “me, me, me” and tried buckling it herself. She has also recently started saying “mine” though I’m not quite sure she knows what she is saying yet. She knows how to blow her own nose and she often gets tissues and holds them up to her nose, blows, wipes, and then throws the tissue away in the garbage. She likes to throw her own diapers away in the garbage too, and any other trash she might find around the house. One day she poked her head in the fridge saying, “bi, bi, bi” (bite) and looking for some food. She found the yogurt and applesauce shelf and went to grab her own yogurt, but then Owen’s chocolate yogurt caught her eye and she grabbed it and dashed off to find Owen saying, “Owey… Owey…Owey…”. We tried telling her Owen needed a spoon too, but she was a girl on a mission and just marched over to Owen with his yogurt and made him take it. Then she came back to get herself one of her own. The next day she went fishing for yogurt she was saying, “Owey” again maybe thinking she would get him one first, but there were no yogurts for him so she grabbed one of hers and said, “Iya”. She doesn’t often say her own name and has been referring to herself as “baby” so I was happy to see her saying Isla.

Isla has been talking so much. I don’t know if she talks a lot for her age or not since Owen was speech delayed, but it is quite a change around here for such a little person to be able to say so much! She usually drops the last consonant off of her words, for example, bite = bi, up = uh, book = boo, bath = ba, ice = i. But she also says some two syllable words, for example, puppy, diddy = kitty, pitty = pretty. Recently Grammie watched her and said that she asked for a raisin by saying “raisin”. I had never heard her say it before, so later that night I told Daddy what Grammie had heard her say. Isla perked up and looked up at us with a smile on her face. I asked her if she could say raisin and she smiled and said, “raisin”. She said it almost perfectly, just softening the “n” a bit as she tends to do with that last consonant. She often copies what we say and tries out new words readily. Whenever she tries communicating something to us, if we don’t get it right away she keeps trying to tell us what she means. If we figure it out she smiles and claps for us as if to say, “good for you, you got it!” I joke that she’s being condescending the way she claps for us, but really she is simply delighted that she can communicate with us.

Isla loves to play. She plays pretend and rough houses with Daddy and Owen. She is very immersed in pretend play. She pretends with her dolls and her kitchen all of the time. She feeds her babies, hugs her babies, kisses her babies, puts her babies to sleep, tries to wrap them in blankets, gives them drinks of water or bottles, puts them on toys to ride or in chairs to sit, etc. She seems to translate  everything we do for her to pretend play with her babies, something her brother never quite got the concept of. She is so different from Owen in her passion for pretend play that we are having a lot of fun watching this different personality emerge. Owen and her also have really been enjoying their rough housing times with Daddy. Isla climbs on Daddy’s back for a horsey ride (something we call dooty dooty) and gets really excited and laughs. Owen “hoopas” daddy (which is a word they made up for “punch”) and Isla copies. Sometimes if Daddy and Owen get too involved in being rough with each other Isla will get worried and start to whimper, so Daddy and Owen have to reassure her that everyone is okay. For the most part though she loves these play sessions and gets right in there to play too even though she is so much smaller than Owen is.

The big news this month though is that Isla has suddenly taken an interest in the potty chair! At the very end of this month she started to understand what we mean by “potty” and how she can sit on her potty chair to do it. She asks for her diaper off and then sits on the chair. Daddy says, “go potty, ssssssssss” then Isla says, “sssssssss” and gets up. Daddy persuades her to sit again, and she keeps getting up and running around. The first time she wanted to do this she was sitting on the potty and then jumped up and yelled, “potty!” as she went on the floor in front of her chair. Then she went on the top of the stairs, twice, and then on the rocking chair. That’s when Mama couldn’t take it anymore and put her diaper back on ;-) Daddy has more patience with these things. The second time we tried Isla went potty on the floor again right next to the chair. She seems to know when she is going to go, and if the chair is near her she attempts to get to it, but she can’t get on it herself so she will need a lot more practice before she can learn this whole potty thing! Of course she is very young to be learning about potty, but as long as she is interested we will go with it. I will always regret that I didn’t allow Owen to learn more about going potty in the potty chair when he was ready, and waited because people said he was too young. We then missed his window and it took YEARS to get him interested again. We aren’t letting that happen this time around!

Isla Has Surgery

On November 2nd we took little Miss Isla to Chidlren’s Hospital for surgery. I had previously posted about her diagnosis of Vesicoureteral Reflux when she was just a tiny sweet potato. When she was 12 months old she got a bladder (or possibly kidney) infection, and while being treated for it she got another of a different strain. Shortly after that we brought Isla back to her urologist for a renal scan. Her scan showed that her kidneys were normal. One was slightly smaller than the other, but within a normal range. However, since she had two infections, her urologist felt she should get another RNC (or VCUG), which is an invasive test that I didn’t want her to have to go through again. We talked about our options, and since I also was not a fan of keeping her on long term antibiotics, we decided to do the deflux procedure. Our urologist said he could test whether she is refluxing while she was under for the deflux, so we could completely avoid another RNC. She does have to have one more RNC to see if the deflux worked, but she will be given Nitrous Oxide to sedate her, which she already had at 12 months during her catheter urine draw, and it worked very well.

A couple weeks before her surgery we brought her to Children’s hospitalto an evening set aside for kids undergoing surgery to get used to the hospital and the equipment. Isla watched a puppet show there, and then got to play with stethoscopes, and masks, and other equipment. She saw a hospital room and the waiting area in the surgical unit. She was also sent home with a hospital play bag with a paper mask, a hair net, a coloring book, some latex gloves and some other common hospital items. We checked out the book Franklin Goes to the Hospital from the library. Every day Daddy and her played with the hospital items and read her book together. This was in the hopes of preparing her for the experience she was about to have.

On the morning of November 2nd I had to stop nursing Isla at 6:00 am, and she could not have any clear liquids after 8:00 am. We had to check in to the hospital at 10:00 am and her surgery was scheduled for 11:30 am. I thought this part was going to be tough, but it wasn’t bad at all. We just had to distract her and not eat or drink in front of her. After dropping Owen off at school we headed to Children’s. Grammie met us there.

They had Isla change into hospital clothes, and we were quickly given our own room. Isla didn’t seem to mind being there much at all, though she wasn’t crazy about getting her weight and heart rate taken she didn’t protest too much.

She doesn’t usually take a pacifier but we thought it would be a good comfort item for her in the hospital if she could learn to take it since she could not have anything to eat or drink. She did seem to enjoy sucking and chewing on it to distract her from food and drink.

Isla was playing with a car in the waiting area, so when we moved to a room she kept saying “wee” and pointing into the hallway. She even saw another little girl playing out there with a car and she could barely stand it she wanted that car so bad. So the child life specialist got her a car too, and Grammie and Isla went out into the halls and drove the car for quite some time while we waited. This worked out perfectly because Grammie likes hospitals, and I very much don’t, so it was nice to have Grammie there to walk Isla around the halls and I could just sit in our room and watch TV.

Isla found a friend in the hallway who was having tubes put in her ears. Her and Isla kept switching cars. Isla would get in and out of her car constantly, and then try to push the other little girl into a specific car. They pushed each other’s car to give the other a ride and rode around and had a great time, not realizing what was about to happen!

Finally Isla’s urologist arrived. He wrote his initials on Isla’s left arm, because we knew her left ureter would likely need to be injected with gel. He said he would check the right side as well. We also met with the anesthesiologist and her nurse. Isla had to have a few things checked by the nurses before surgery and at one point she signed “all done” because she was fed up with whatever they were doing.

Soon it was time for the operation. I hugged and kissed her, and then Daddy took her to be put under. Daddy had to wear the surgical cap and we both reminded Isla of Franklin and told her that now it was time for her surgery too. She seemed to remember Franklin and realize what was going to happen and was calm while Daddy took her off to surgery.

Daddy held her while they put the mask over her face. He said that she resisted the mask a little bit, but didn’t really cry or fight it.  He said that the nurse sang “Old McDonald had a farm…” and then she was out. He said it wasn’t scary, like they warned us it would be, but that she just seemed to be sleeping. Daddy gave her a kiss and then came back to see us.

Grammie and I went to get lunch and bring it back to the waiting area. While we were eating, our doctor came out and told us it was all done. That was fast! He said it was worse than they had thought. The left side refluxed a lot, and the right side was refluxing too, though not as much as the left. He also said he thought the surgery was a success, but we will need to follow up with one more RNC to make sure. If the RNC shows that she has no reflux, then we can discontinue her antibiotics.

Here are pictures of her ureters before and after the procedure:

It was hard knowing she was out of surgery, but that we had to wait to see her. They usually want to observe them until they are somewhat awake and stable, and they don’t want parents around at that time. Since she was totally out of it and sleeping I didn’t protest, but it was still a pretty antsy feeling knowing she was done with the surgery but I couldn’t be with her. Once she was awake they came and got us and we rushed into to see her. They had brought her back to the same room we were in before her surgery. A nurse was holding a very groggy and out of it baby! They said to her, “look who’s here, Mama’s here!” and she took a great deal of effort to lift her head to look for me. I took her and she started whimpering a bit. She couldn’t hold her head up, and her lips and mouth were very dry (from having a tube in to secure her airway). She was very heavy in my arms, and floppy like a newborn again. I asked if I could breastfeed her and the nurse said “yes”, so I immediately latched her on and she fell sound asleep.

We had to wait an hour before leaving to make sure she was stable enough to go home. Daddy wanted to hold her too in her drunkin and loopy state (since it is so sweet to have a newborn-like baby again, if only for a few hours!).  Here they are about a half hour or so after we reunited with her:

Soon the hour was up, Isla was stable and ready to go. The nurse removed her name band and the monitor stuck to her toe. She also had to start taking the tape off of her IV. The IV bag was no longer attached, but their was still a needle going into her arm with a bit of tubing on it in case they needed access to her vein. This whole thing was taped up quite a bit and Isla absolutely hated it when the nurse held her arm to unwind the tape. She cried and cried, and it seemed to take forever. This was the worst part for her, and all in all, that’s not too bad if the worst part of surgery is removing the IV! The nurse finally got down to the needle, removed it, bandaged it up, and then we all headed back to our house (Grammie included). I sat in the back seat with Isla and had to hold her head during some of the turns. When we got home, I nursed and held her for a few hours while she slept. Then she woke up and wanted to play. She acted as if nothing at all had happened. We gave a dose of Tylenol because she did seem a bit uncomfortable and was holding herself and saying “owie” every so often (this was either due to painful urination or bladder spasms). She was also a little tipsy, and we had to watch her to make sure she didn’t fall. Later that night while playing with Owen she did fall and hit the coffee table and got a bruise on her cheek. Owen didn’t realize there was anything different about her because she was playing so normally, so he didn’t heed our warnings to be careful with her.

These are Isla’s “sick socks” that she got at the hospital. This is shortly after waking up. She went right over to her hospital play bag and started playing with her latex gloves. We said she was probably processing the experience.

Her procedure went very well. Much better than I thought it would go. I was very pleased with how she was treated and how good they were with children there. Both the procedure itself and the recovery were very quick. We still need to schedule her follow up RNC, but we are hopeful that this procedure worked and she will be in the clear. I will keep you all posted!

Halloween 2011!!!

Our Halloween festivities started on October 22nd when our neighborhood community center threw a Halloween party.

Owen and Isla enjoyed playing games and eating lunch afterward. Isla’s ducky suit was very much admired, and Owen got a chance to break in his Jedi costume.

The next Halloween thing we did was on the 30th, the day before Halloween. We went to a small farm to pick out a Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin, a pie pumpkin and some squash. Then we were off to a fun place to feed animals, play around on tractors, and see some spooky things.

Owen and Isla both loved feeding the animals. Here is a video of them:

After playing around all day, we headed home to carve our pumpkins. Owen and I each carved a pumkin. I did the small one and Owen did the large one. Owen drew the face on, but I actually carved it. Owen tried but couldn’t quite get the hang of using the knife this year.

The next day it was Halloween!

Isla dressed as a duck, and Owen as a Jedi. Isla knew what she was supposed to be and kept saying “duck” and looking at herself in the mirror and smiling. Daddy took both kids around the block first and I stayed and passed out candy. A lot of kids came! So many that we ran out of candy and had to dig into what Owen brought home, and then we had to just shut of the lights and close up shop. Next year we will be more prepared. Daddy said that Isla never really got the hang of what she was doing, but enjoyed walking around outside carrying her pumpkin. Owen loved trick-or-treating in a real neighborhood and so when they returned I brought Owen out again to go some more. He filled up his pillow case with lots of candy. When we got back Daddy said that Isla took off most of her ducky suit so she was just in a white onsie and tights. He said she loved when people would come to the door and would run up to see them. They would ask, “and what are you?” and she would say, “duck!” though she looked nothing at all like a duck at that point.

We had a fun Halloween and we all shared the candy for days afterward. Can’t wait for next year!

Isla is 15 Months Old

On October 27th, one day before she turned 15 months old, Isla was weighed and measured at the doctor’s office. She is 29 1/2 inches tall which puts her in the 23rd percentile for height and she is 17 pounds 13 ounces which puts her in the first percentile for weight. She is not gaining well because she lost her appetite ever since she had her infections and has been on antibiotics. We are trying to get some high fat foods into her every day and get her eating as much as possible.

Isla started out this month though as a little stunt rider! She climbed up onto her rocking horse, then stood up on the seat, and then let go of the handles! She had a huge smile on her face the whole time. Thankfully Mama was right there to catch her if she fell.

Here is Isla “helping” Uncle Mike fix our fireplace. She was so interested in what he was doing and spent most of the time he was working leaning over his shoulder watching him.

She is talking a lot and says about 15 to 20 words. She says “shoe” and “sa” (sock). Shoes and socks are one of her favorite things, and now she points to them and says, “shoe”, “sa”, “shoe”, “sa”. She takes on and off various shoes and socks throughout the day. She also likes to put on hats and dresses and even Owen’s dirty underware on her head when she finds them laying around. She has a sun dress that she never got to wear so we put it in her dress up clothes and when she finds it she slips one of the straps over her head and walks around with it dangling in front of her like an apron.

In this photo Isla is opening up her box of stuff from Grandma. Grandma sent some of Isla’s favorite things: shoes and necklaces!

Daddy reported that one day Isla spilled some of her water. She then walked over and got a rag out of the rag drawer, went to the spot where she spilled and waved and hit it over the spot, then threw the rag down the stairs to the laundry room. She did this all of her own accord and she was all business about it. She didn’t actually wipe any of the water up, but she certainly knew the steps to take when we spill. This is just one example of how she seems to be observing us when we don’t even know it.

Here is Isla coloring. She couldn’t quite keep her masterpiece on the paper.

Isla played with the 18 month old neighbor girl for first time this month. She was happy to see her and walked right up to her and tried talking to her and handed her leaves. Isla didn’t want to be touched though, and the neighbor girl really wanted to touch Isla. They played next to each other, not with each other in typical toddler fashion. Soon after this, she played with Asa for the first time in a long time. And they played together in the same way, Isla tried to dodge being touched and they played next to each other and not with each other.

Isla is getting a real attitude lately. She throws tantrums when she doesn’t get her way. She screams and yells at us sometimes too. She will try to “tell” on Owen if he gets her mad by coming over and crying and saying, “Owie”. She is determined to do what she wants to do and does not follow along with us when out and about. She has been known to run in the opposite direction instead and start laughing about it. She really has her own agenda and is not shy about getting her way.

Like I wrote last month, Isla was saying degoba for peek-a-boo. Well this month it evolved to peed-o-ba and then to peet-a-bah. She is also saying “bi” (bite) when she wants a bite of food. She will bring a box of crackers to us and say, “bi, bi, bi” to indicate she wants some, or she will just say it to get a bite of something we have. She also started saying “boo”. She says this and bends her knees and laughs. One day she kept doing this with Grammie over and over again and thought it was soooo funny. She is really loving her Grammie lately and when Grammie is around Isla wants to be held by her and not by me.

Also, she is still loving playing in her play kitchen. She pretends to eat and to chew. She will take a spoon or a fork and pretend to chomp on food as she holds it up to her mouth, or her doll’s mouth, or our mouth. One day she pulled Daddy over and made him sit down by her kitchen so they could play together. Then she started chomping on pretend food and giving some to him too. Speaking of Daddy, one day she pulled down the front of daddy’s shirt, started petting his chest hair and said “pretty”.

Isla calls for the cat, saying “diddy, diddy”.  She loves going outside. We had unseasonably warm weather this month and Owen and Isla both took advantage of it by going outside almost every day. If Owen goes out, Isla will just start getting her jacket and hat and shoes on as if there is no question whether she can go outside too. We will really need a fence next year to keep her in our yard and out of the street, but for now the gazebo made a good outdoor play pen. She still loves music and dances all the time. She loves the days when we watch Ellen and we dance with her at the beginning of her show. Isla gets a huge smile on her face as we dance around the room, and when I put her down again she just keeps dancing.

Isla says “Owie” all the time now. When Owen was gone at Grammie’s house, Isla asked for him over and over again. After him being gone two nights, the morning after the second night Isla woke up and said “Owie, Owie, Owie” and then got her back pack and keys and waved bye as if to say, “okay, let’s go get that boy, because he obviously isn’t coming back any other way”.

Isla eats applesauce and yogurt really well. It is pretty much all she wants to eat these days. She can scoop with a spoon into her mouth really good now with only a little bit of mess.

She says oooo-ooo-oooo in a sing-songy way whenever she goes into Owen’s room. We used to do this as it was being worked on and painted, so she must have gotten the idea that this is just what we say when we enter Owen’s room. Now that it is done she still says it almost every time she enters it.

Isla finally learned to sign “all done” when she is done eating. She prefers the sign of pushing with her feet against the bottom of her clip on high chair and making herself come up out of the chair. She has been doing that for months to indicate she is done, and Daddy has been trying to teach her the sign. Now she will push herself out and Daddy will say “all done” (as he signs it)? And she will look at him and sign “all done” and then go back to pushing herself out. She also learned to sign “more” and she shakes her head “no” vigorously when she doesn’t want something, so between all those signs meal times are slightly easier.

Isla is learning the parts of the body. She points to eyes, nose, mouth, and ears on me while she nurses and then points to them on herself. She tries saying the words too. She points to her belly or to Owen’s belly and says “booba”. We keep telling her this is a belly button, but she insists that it is a booba. She is even learning the words for her private parts and says “bulba” for vulva. She likes to help wipe herself during a diaper change so I give her a wipe and when she is done she claps her hands.

She is on a low does antibiotic to prevent infections before her surgery on November 2nd. The doctor had given her one that tasted terrible, so Isla started gagging on it and spitting it out. I had to call and switch the medication to a different one, and it took a few times before Isla wouldn’t just instantly spit it out. Once she realized it was going to taste good again she started taking it fine.

I bought Isla a tooth brush this month and she loves brushing her teeth. She walks up to the medicine cabinet and points and says “ti” (teeth) until I hand her the tooth brush. Then she puts it in her mouth and moves it around a little and drools like crazy.

Isla is starting to get a sense of fear over certain things. In social situations she starts to look a little nervous sometimes. Also, when she hears a loud noise she instantly runs to one of us and hugs our leg. She doesn’t cry or anything, she just looks worried and needs some physical contact for reassurance. Anything from the vacuum to an unexpected noise will send her running to one of us.

Isla continues to be a delightful little girl. She is doing many new and fun things lately and it is so fun watching her change into a toddler and watching her learn to play more and more with her brother and learn to communicate more and more with us.

My Big Kid Owen

Owen has been growing and learning and saying really funny things, but since so much of my time is spent updating Isla’s monthly blog posts I am afraid I have neglected writing about him for quite some time. The above photo is from all the way back in March, those pants don’t even fit him anymore!

We just visited the doctor and Owen weighs 45 pounds these days. He is just under the 50th percentile for weight and just over it for height, so he is tall and skinny. Well, tall for our family anyway.

Here is Owen in May trying out his new bike he got for his birthday from Grammie and Grampy. Back then he was still a kindergartner who was almost done with the year and looking forward to the summer. Some cute things he said around that time:

When we were looking at houses we stumbled upon one a bit out of our price range one day, and when Owen saw that wonderful finished basement he said, “we could play the dice game down here!” Which, if translated, I think meant, “this is just as nice of a basement as Unlce Rob and Aunt Joanne have, which is where we play the dice game on Christmas day”.

Owen learned about the presidents in kindergarten when they prepared for a school presentation. Owen came home very excited and told us how he learned there was a bowling alley and a swimming pool inside the White House. He said, “so Daddy should be president so we can live in the White House!” Daddy jumped in and said, “Oh no, I don’t want to be president, I can’t stand politics”. Then without missing a beat, Owen turned to me and said, “how about you Mama?” I loved that he didn’t think twice about a woman being president.

On one of the last days of school the Oprah show was ending. I told him we couldn’t play in the playground after school because I wanted to get home and watch the last couple Oprah shows. When we turned it on and it was a big party he got excited and said “I wanted to go there, too bad I had school. Maybe we should have canceled school so we could go.” Yep, because that’s all that was standing in our way :-) Whenever Owen was sick he would say, “we need to cancel school” as if it was an appointment we had made.

Owen with the cast of one of his favorite shows. He calls them “the Simptons”. He also still says, “pacept” for except.

Owen at “Park 2″ as he calls it. We also had Park 1, and Park 0 within walking distance of our apartment. I forget where Park 3 is, but we now live next to the newly christened Park 4. Owen is getting a little braver at the park these days as you can see from the photo.

Owen and Daddy on Daddy’s birthday. That’s a pound cake, which is one of the only sweets these two guys can handle. Owen really started to embrace celebrating holidays lately. He has also really begun some intensive questioning about religions, gods, and cultural belief systems. It is hard for him to understand the concept that other people believe in something different than his family, when we all have the same information and reasoning abilities in front of us. He continues to ask us about all of the different gods and all of the different religions and tries to understand why people believe in what they do.

Soon kindergarten was over and it was summer vacation! Here is Owen planting his plants on the balcony this summer. He planted all of the plants this year. Some of them grew and some didn’t. He planted all the seeds in pots, and then lined the pots on the railing of the balcony, and then watered them periodically throughout the summer. It was a good outdoor activity for him.

Here is Owen in his favorite place at our apartment: outside on the balcony in his sandbox. On this day he decided to fill his socks with sand. It’s amazing how much he got in there!

Since we have moved he has spent every single day outside playing in the dirt in our backyard. He just sits out there on his own very content, or he plays with the neighbor kid in his yard or in our yard. Even though we didn’t get to go camping this summer, he seemed to fill his outdoor quota with these other activities.

After having a TV-free summer in 2010, the summer of 2011 was filled with too much screen time! Owen has about 3 plug and play retro and Star Wars video games that he played, as well as watching a good deal of PBS kids. I didn’t have the energy to ban screen time as I was busy trying to find a house, packing, and taking care of a toddler. I really think that the excessive TV viewing was a byproduct of apartment living though because he has barely watched anything since moving to our new house. He prefers to play in the back yard, which I’m very happy about.

Ever since he has been really little, Owen has loved these guys that dress up at the Mall. He runs up and hugs them and waves to them. This is very odd because he is an anxious and very slow to be social kid, yet he interacts with these guys like he’s a bold outgoing kid. Recently he has started to question me about these guys. He said, “why are there funny animals that know they are alive?” I told him they are just people dressed as animals, and he promptly stopped paying attention to me. I guess he prefers to keep the magic alive a little longer :-)

Owen in the middle of summer enjoying a smoothy, one of his favorite treats.

Throwing rocks in the lake we often walk around during the summer months. We only got there once or twice this busy summer, but Owen remembered all his favorite spots to play around.

Before we moved I took some final photos of Owen’s room. He had this nice big room from the time he was 2 and a half to the time he was six. I had painted it for him before we even moved in. At first we decorated it with cowboy decorations from his nursery in the house we had before the apartment. Then his preference shifted to robots and outer space, so his room became a funny mixture of cowboys, robots and outer space as well as some odds and ends from thrift stores that didn’t match anything else. His new room is just robots and outer space, and we have saved all the over random decorations for the play area. Owen still misses his old room and our old apartment, but hopefully he will get used to our new house soon. It should help that his room is now finished being painted and his toys are in there  so he can play in it.

Here is Owen is his old room one more time right before we left the apartment for the last time. It looks a lot smaller without all of his stuff!

When we were looking for a house one day we were discussing houses and how much we thought we could afford. Owen heard our conversation and said that if we didn’t have enough for a nice house we could have some of his money from his piggy bank. What a sweet boy.

Speaking of money, lately Owen had been saving up to go to Sea Life Aquarium. He also started a money unit for math at school. He began counting his money over and over and over again. He told us that ever since he started saving up and learning about money in school he has really started to like money. He tells us he wants to make a lot of money when he grows up and be rich. I guess we have a little Alex P. Keaton on our hands!

Owen’s kindergarten teacher gave each kid a calendar of the summer and a sheet of stickers with activities on them. The idea was to do as many activities as possible. They were things like, “buy an ice cream cone on a hot day” or “go on a picnic”. This is Owen posing at the end of the summer with his filled up calendars. He managed to do each activity.

And then it was time to start first grade. We went to his school one day to meet his teacher and see his classroom. Here is Isla showing us Owen’s locker.

A banner by the first grade rooms welcomes us!

And here we are dropping off school supplies and checking out Owen’s room. Owen got to choose his desk, so he chose one right by the teacher and right by one of his best friends.

This is Owen on his first day of school. His teacher is bran new to the school, and seems nice enough. Owen is doing well this year, though he got thrown off a bit when the school had a real lock down due to a burglary in the neighborhood. But I think he is back on track and doing well. He is a bit bored in math, but recently some of the moms have started to volunteer with the kids who are working ahead so that has helped a bit. Owen has made a new friend this year and has even gone on a couple play dates with him.

Owen continues to be constantly curious and inquisitive. He likes to ask about strings being the smallest thing in the universe (string theory) and he likes to speculate about whether there is a multiverse or not (he believes there is one). He has given up on being a magician ever since my sister showed him a scary illusionist show, and he is now trying to decide if he wants to be a paleontologist, archeologist, nuclear physicist (or in his words, “the person that discovers new elements”), or a stay-at-home dad.

One day shortly after Isla was born he announced that he had decided to become a dad when he grows up. Months later I asked him what he was going to be when he grew up and he said, “that’s a hard choice. I’m trying to decide if I should be a paleontologist, an archeologist, or a dad”. I suggested that he could be a dad and one of those other things. He said, “but then I’ll have to work all the time and I won’t have any time for my kids”. I said, “oh, are you thinking about being a dad that stays home with your kids, and then your wife will work?” and he said, “yeah, cause I want to play with them and stuff, and if I have to go to college and then have a job all day I’ll never get to see my kids”. I thought it was touching that he holds the stay-at-home parent’s job in such high esteem that he would find it just as fulfilling as those other jobs. However, I am rooting for a science occupation for him. Maybe he can take a few years off to raise the kiddos :-) I think having Isla has really made him want to be a dad someday himself and he often mentions it. He says he needs to learn household things to “learn how to be a dad”. Whatever he decides we will be happy as long as he is happy. I do think though that having the goal of dad in mind might help him to learn to do things around the house that he might not otherwise be interested in mastering, so I’m glad this is a goal at the moment even though I expect it will change as he grows.

In a surprising turn of events, Owen started to take a real liking to football last season. He sits and watches the games and gets very involved with them at times. This is surprising since neither of his parents are that into football, or any other sport. Owen seems to really like the competition and identifying with a home team as well as the math involved in scoring, the trivia involved in learning about different teams, and the rules involved in the game. He likes other sports as well, like baseball and basketball, but football is his favorite. I am not crazy about the violence, or the objectification of women in football, but I do think it might be of value for him socially to relate to other guys when he is older so I have allowed it – albeit with lots of discussion around the issues I personally object to. This season he has not started watching yet because if it is warm enough for him to play outside happily, then I would rather he do that. He did watch the end of the Packers versus Vikings game though, and was once again disappointed by our lame team.

I am sure I am forgetting things, but those are the main things Owen is up to lately. We are very proud of him, and very tired after a long day of being asked a googalplex questions ;-)
